Panel 1. At one in the morning on a motel walkway, Tyler sits slumped against his room door, very drunk, with the key card clenched in his hand. Tyler: “Lost my key.”

Panel 2. Sam crouches beside Tyler on the empty walkway. Tyler’s bare neck and the key card in his fist are close; Sam goes very still but does not touch him. No dialogue.

Panel 3. Sam takes the key card from Tyler’s hand and opens the motel-room door. Sam: “It was in your hand.” Tyler: “Huh.”

Panel 4. Tyler lies safely in bed with his shoes off and a glass of water on the nightstand. Sam stands by the door with his hand on the light switch. Tyler: “You’re a good guy, Sam.” Sam: “Go to sleep.”

An ordinary guy. Mostly.

Sam calls the game. The rest of his life is harder to explain.
